Bill & Alice Kay Ulrich were trying to decide how to spend a small nest egg they had saved in January of 1989. With the options narrowed down to a trip to Europe or starting a business, they decided to postpone their oversea adventure and build something for the future: an ice cream parlor.

By February 1989, they had chosen a location in the newly built Westgate Plaza located at 1755 West Main St. in Ephrata. Starting with block walls, they were able to finish the interior of their ice cream shop for opening day on May 1, 1989. The Udder Choice was born.

The Udder Choice outgrew its original location after 15 years of serving the best ice cream around. Bill & Alice decided that building from the ground up was going to be best for the future of the company. They broke ground on October 29, 2002 and 6 months of construction later, the doors opened at the new building, our present-day location, on April 7, 2003.

Through many years of hard work, Bill & Alice Kay have earned their place as a favorite among hungry locals, know for their hearty breakfasts, tasty sandwiches, and, of course, their ice cream. The Udder Choice celebrated its 30th Anniversary in May of 2019.
